LANDSCAPE COD 2027

TUESDAY, JANUARY 19
3:00 - 4:00 PM

Non-Traditional Workforce Development & Training

Garden Time’s Green Reentry Job Training Program is a unique workforce development program that has become a model for creating meaningful career pathways for formerly incarcerated men and women in the green industry by centering lived experience and long-term support. In this session, Garden Time will review some best practices and lessons learned over the past five years, including offering broad green industry training topics and engaging with employer partners to create long-lasting relationships. Learn how green businesses get involved with Garden Time, and why Green Reentry graduates are uniquely valuable in the workforce.

Kate Lacouture is the co-founder and executive director of Garden Time, and a landscape architect and licensed arborist in Providence, RI. She has been teaching incarcerated men and women green industry skills since 2011 and developed the Green Reentry Job Training Program in 2021. Kate will be joined by Garden Time’s Canopy Crew, a team of graduates of the training program, now Garden Time staff, who are working to improve canopy cover in historically underserved communities, and have become essential to the success of the Green Reentry program and local urban forestry initiatives.
